1. COMMON MISTAKES THAT CAN COST YOU A WORTHWHILE ADMISSION
It's worthy to note that there are a lot of mistakes that can cost candidates their admission.
- O'level upload on jamb portal
- Absence from physical screening (putme)
- Wrong screening date
- Leaving the screening venue without submitting your credentials
- JAMB CAPS
- Rudeness to Interviewers
- Dressing
O'level upload on jamb portal
Some candidates, during jamb registration used awaiting result, it is important to know that once your result is out after the jamb exams you are supposed to go upload yor O’level on the jamb portal. Even as if speak, many jambites are yet to do that.
Absence from physical screening
Some people think attending the physical screening is optional. No! its not optional, its compulsory. Not attending the physical screening means discarding your chance of admission
Wrong screening date
It is important that you check the screening schedule carefully. The screening has been scheduled to hold according to faculties. For example someone who applied for Medicine and Surgery is under College of Health Sciences group
Leaving the screening venue without submitting your credentials
“Oh I forgot to give the interviewer my credentials”….. after you have been interviewed, the interviewer will ask for originals and photocopies of your credentials, arrange the originals of all your documents separately, do same for the photocopies also. do not make such costly mistake of not submitting the photocopies to your interviewer, its just same as not attending the screening
JAMB CAPS
Village people no go catch us ooo….. be careful when its time to accept your admission on the jamb caps portal. I remember a younger friend of mine rejected his admission on JAMB CAPS a year before last year…. Fiam! He lost the admission even as we speak. Be careful on the JAMB CAPS when its time to accept admission please.
Rudeness to interviewers
My father is the chief judge of UK, my mother is Aisha Buhari. In our family, nobody talks to us anyhow…… During the screening or even after the screening, respect everyone that comes your way; the interviewers, your fellow jambites even the SECURITY. You can see that I wrote security in capital letters…. Admitted students will understand better.
Dressing
You’ll be addressed the way you are dressed…. Details on this will be discussed later.
2. PREPARING FOR THE PHYSICAL SCREENING
There are a lot of tips on how to prepare for the physical screening;
Leave your residence early, candidates in a very far region should leave at most two days before their screening date
Because you are a science student does not mean you must do your screening under faculty of science. There are a lot of science courses that is not under FS. Make sure you ask questions to know under which faculty your course falls under
Arrive early on the screening day
Listen to every information being announced by the interviewers
Respect the SECURITY. I repeat respect them
Make sure your documents are well arranged. Originals separately from photocopies
Answer what you are being asked only. Don’t be too forward
Sit only if you’re asked to do so, otherwise remain standing
3. DRESSING MATTERS
Of course dressing matters a lot, try and appear decent enough; dress moderately, do not attract attention (especially ladies). Nobody is asking non-muslims to wear hijab compulsorily. But please do not dress provocatively. Respect the norms of the society you want to study in. for the guys, sagging, flying your shirt buttons won’t help you, if your hair is much, you can simply put on a cap. Dressing is an important part of the society. I hope you all understand?
4. CONFIDENCE AND QUANDARY
I have observed that so many aspirants find it difficult to comport themselves at the place of physical screening. Do you know that confidence is being graded in physical interviews? YES!
Build up your confidence before leaving your destination, believe in yourself, do not see yourself as a failure… see it as if you’re going to meet your friends for chitchat.
Tips on confidence
- Stand in front of a mirror, or use the front camera of your phone. Look at the mirror and say some soothing words to yourself, praise yourself. In fact, “whine” yourself. This might sound funny but trust me it works.
- Take chilled water at least 30 mins before entering the interview hall this will help calm your nerves
- Breathe in and out like 5 times as you’re entering
- Maintain a good standing position
- Look directly into the eyes of your interviewers while greeting them or while answering questions
- Do not fret if an interviewer yells at you, it is part of the test..lol
- Some interviewers are quite hilarious, do not laugh loudly at their jokes. You could just give a broad smile and switch to your “business” countenance immediately
- Quandary is a situation where someone is confused and do not know what to say. Build your confidence so as to avoid such dilemma.
5. FACING THE PANEL OF INTERVIEWERS
Facing the panel of interviewers is not a big deal as most of you think. Interviewers are normal humans like you; they are not there to scare you, some may even shout at you or insult you… all of these is just to test your temperament. We talked about confidence in the previous session. Confidence is all you need to face your interviewer.
6. POSSIBLE QUESTIONS
Below are possible questions you should expect during the physical screening
- What is your name (avoid saying “my names are”)
- Which state are you from?
- What’s the name of the senator representing your constituency?
- What’s the name of your governor?
- What do you know about your chosen course of study
- What was your strongest subject in high school?
- Define basic concept in your chosen course of study (e.g define force for a physics with electronics aspirant)
- Why didn’t you choose universities in your region?
- Why did you choose to study in Federal University Birnin Kebbi?
- What should your local community expect from you in terms of development after your degree
7. Now that I'm done with the Physical Screening, what next?
Do not cut yourself off from information platforms… you need them most at this time
Be careful online. This is the time you’ll meet “charlatans and demagogues” on the internet promising you of helping you with admission. Do not fall into their trap; it’s dangerous
Upload your O’level on your JAMB CAPS if you have not done so. JAMB will not give admission to anyone without O’level even if you passed the physical interview
Get all documents ready before admission comes out.
When admission list is released, you’ll be required to come for admission screening and registration
Above all, keep praying, do not stop praying. Prayer works.
Thanks for your time.
